Beach day checklist
Most visitors to the Kailua Target are on their way to the beach. One thing on the shelves is different from the mainland: sunscreen.
Hawaii's reef-safe sunscreen law
Act 104 of 2018 stopped the sale and distribution of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, beginning in 2021, to protect coral reefs. In 2021 the legislature considered going further: HB102 proposed banning avobenzone and octocrylene from 1 January 2023 unless prescribed.
In practice, sunscreens labelled with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients avoid all four of these filters. Check the "Active ingredients" box on the back rather than a "reef safe" claim on the front.
Checklist
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide / titanium dioxide) | complies with Act 104 and avoids the filters proposed in HB102 |
| Reusable tote | Oahu shops no longer give out free plastic checkout bags (why) |
| Reef shoes | for rocky entries; stand on sand, not on coral |
